MADISON COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A ten hour standoff in Madison County ended with the gunman dead. The tense ordeal that started about one p-m Friday on Southampton Circle, in the Lake Caroline subdivision.
Deputies came to the residence to serve warrants. As they approached, Keith Mitts began shooting with a high powered weapon. Officers returned fire.
Mitts never again communicated with law enforcement after that exchange of gunfire, despite officers' attempts with a bullhorn and phone calls.
Around 11 p.m. Swat teams moved in.
"We were just basically doing some movement around the house just trying to see if we could find movement" said Madison County Sheriff Toby Trowbridge. "We tried every other thing to no avail of getting any response or movement or anything and while they were in one location and threw flash bangs in there, the opportunity arose."
The house caught fire and smoke started pouring out. Mitts was discovered dead in the rear of the home.
A medical examiner will determine if his fatal wounds were self inflicted.
