JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A rural Mississippi school district has denied accusations it routed a lesbian high school student to a "sham" prom at a country club while her schoolmates partied at another location.
The Itawamba County School District addressed the claims made by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of Constance McMillen in papers filed Friday with the U.S. District Court in Aberdeen.
McMillen attended a prom at the Fulton Country Club April 2 that drew less than 10 other students from Itawamba Agricultural High School. The ACLU said most of her classmates attended a separate event at the Evergreen Community Center.
McMillen has filed suit against the district and is seeking monetary damages, claiming she was humiliated.
