MADISON, MS (WLBT) - The State Department of Public Safety is test firing every weapon that was on the scene of the standoff at Lake Caroline in Madison last week.
The standoff began with gunfire and ended 10 hours later when officers found Keith Mitts dead inside his home from a gunshot wound.
It's an effort to prove whether the fatal bullet came from a law enforcement officer or if it was self-inflicted.
As of Tuesday, each law enforcement agency had turned in the weapons for test firing except the Madison Police Department. It could take several more days to make the determination, but sources tell WLBT the gunshot wound was most likely self-inflicted.
The standoff began when officers tried to serve a warrant on Mitts and he fired at them with a high powered rifle.
