JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A living legend in medicine was honored Saturday in the capital city.
A gala held at the Jackson Convention Complex recognized the accomplishments of Dr. Robert Smith Sr.
Smith is a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes and related illnesses.
He is the founder and primary care physician for Central Mississippi Health Services and was the first African American physician to serve as chief of staff at Central Mississippi Medical Center.
Smith is described as an unsung hero who exposed racist practices within the American Medical Association during the civil rights era.
The evening also included a dinner, silent auction and entertainment.
