Lifeguards finish training just in time for summer

Posted: Updated:

(WLBT) - Memorial Day is the unofficial kick off to summer and all the fun activities that go along with the season, including pool time!

At The Courthouse Racquet and Fitness Club in Flowood dozens of lifeguards were finishing their 40 hours of required water safety training.

Mississippi Homeland Security Director Jay Ledbetter has volunteered as a instructor for the Red Cross for many years. Sunday he was teaching in pool training on how to handle back and neck injuries. His students range in age from 15 to 50 years old.

"Everybody is back in the water this weekend. A lot of people who have never been in the water all winter get back in it. The pools are opening today. It's a critical time. A lot of time it's a make or break time for the police and lifeguards," Ledbetter said.

If you are interested in this program or getting involved with the Red Cross call their number at 601-353-5444.
