JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Veterans who fought for our freedom were honored in downtown Jackson Monday.
Memorial Day morning, the annual Hinds County Memorial Service was held on the lawn of the Hinds County Courthouse.
Hinds County leaders and current and former members of the armed forces, and their families were in attendance.
This years event was titled, 'A Call To Remember'. The celebration featured, song, prayer and patriotic speeches. Those in attendance say they hope to spread a message of appreciation, for those were risk their lives for our freedom.
Larry Simpson, a Navy veteran said, "We served so that we all could be free today and a lot of us that went, the ones that didn't make it back it's just the good lord blessed us. The ones who did make it but we all gave in honor so we all could be free."
The event included a laying of a wreath at the base of the war memorial, and a 21 gun salute.
The speaker at this years event was District four Hinds County Supervisor Phil Fisher. Fisher is also a Brigadier General in the U.S. Army National Guard.
