Downtown buildings destroyed in massive fire

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Jackson firefighters arrived on the scene of a large fire that broke out just before 7 p.m. Tuesday and spread to include three downtown buildings on Monument and Mill streets.

Jitney Jungle Wholesale Produce, Bolden Body Shop and the old Web South Printing are the buildings on fire. Several loud booms were heard as the fire raged.

The old Web South Printing building and the Jitney Jungle building are completely destroyed. Firefighters were pouring water on the Bolden Body Shop building in an effort to salvage any of the business possible.

Smoke billowing from the fire could be seen from several miles away.

"A passerby said lightning struck the building and they were trying to keep our building from being affected, but apparently I don't think they're going to be able to do anything with it because it's very powerful and there's a lot of paper and a lot of pallets in that building besides so it's highly flammable," said Marilyn Bolden, co-owner of Bolden Body Shop.

Lt. Lee Vance, with the Jackson Police Department, asked motorists to avoid the area. JPD blocked Mill Street, between Monument and Amite streets.

An official cause of the fire has not been released. No injuries were reported.
