JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Jackson police tagged it a "holiday crime blitz." Over Memorial Day weekend holiday officers were out in force writing over 900 tickets and making 100 arrests.
The total traffic tickets issued, 945. 430 drivers were ticketed for not having proof of insurance. 247 were given tickets for not having a driver's license.
Police reminded drivers Thursday the penalties are expensive, and you must keep proof of insurance in your vehicle as well as your driver's license.
"Were you surprised to see 430 'no insurance' citations and 247 'no driver's license' citations in four days?" WLBT asked Officer Joseph Daughtry, Sr. with the Jackson Police Department.
"I think they were more surprised to see us than we were to see them," said Daughtry. "We were able to enforce state statues which require motor vehicle operators to have proof of insurance in their vehicles."
What are your chances of getting hit by an uninsured driver? According to a report issued in 2009 by the Insurance Research Council, 28% of motorists in Mississippi are uninsured.
