Madison man killed in standoff threatened mental health worker

Posted: Updated:

MADISON, MS (WLBT) - A new police report shows the man killed in a shootout with Madison police last month had threatened to kill a mental health worker.

Stephanie Wilson, program director for the Pine Grove Outreach Center of Madison, told police that Kevin Mitts had threatened to kill her if he returned to the clinic.

One Jackson lawyer, who consulted with Mitts' wife, said Pine Grove officials should have tried to get mental help for him instead of calling police.

But Madison-Rankin County district attorney, Michael Guest, disagreed.

He says Mitts was loading weapons into his hummer when Madison police and Madison County deputies arrived at his home.

Guest believes that Mitts meant to hurt either someone in the clinic or his own family.
