JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A 52 year old Vicksburg man was hit by a car and killed in the parking lot of a Jackson restaurant, The Crawdad Hole on Lakeland Drive.
Police say Franklin Salas saw two men breaking into his vehicle Saturday afternoon and yelled at them to leave. He started over toward the vehicle, and the men jumped in their car and started to leave. In the process, they ran over Salas, and he died from his wounds Sunday. It happened in police precinct four where crime has been going down rather dramatically.
Kenneth Goodrum is the precinct commander. "We have reduced crime 15 percent. And of course any crime is tragic. But when a person loses his life over just property, it makes you stop and think."
Perhaps you are wondering why it took until Wednesday to learn of this Saturday crime. The police department is undergoing some changes in its public affairs staff. After the promotion of Joseph Daughtry to sergeant, he was put on shift and JPD says the press release on this case was sent out. WLBT did not receive it.
Assistant Chief Lee Vance is convinced somebody knows about this crime and can help."So far we have not identified suspects in this case. And I am sure somebody knows who committed this crime. And we are seeking the identities of these individuals, as soon as we can, so we can get them arrested."
Ironically this crime occurred in a parking lot where there is a sign warning you to protect your valuables from theft. The suspect vehicle is a rather new white Chevrolet Monte Carlo with silver wheels.
