RANKIN COUNTY, MS (WLBT) – A family's day of sun and fun on the Pearl River took a tragic turn when a young child drowned Saturday afternoon.
Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks spokesman Jim Walker said the three year old died while on Flag Island, a sand bar located on the Pearl River north of Jackson in Rankin county.
The little boy has been identified as Brent Holmes of Morton.
Walker said the agency was notified of the drowning around 12:30.
Little Brent was taken from the water and carried about three miles to Ratliff Ferry where he was met by a helicopter.
He was air lifted to University Medical Center.
The Wildlife spokesman said the child was picnicking with his 29 year old father and mother (age not available) on the sand bar when he wandered off into the water.
Their names have not been released.
"At some point he turned up missing. An immediate search on land and in the water began. The body was recovered shortly thereafter in about four feet of water, behind a vessel that was docked," said Walker.
Investigators have not said if the child was wearing a floatation device.
The three year old's death is being investigated as an accidental drowning.
Law enforcement officials remind you to always wear a life jacket or floatation device especially if you can not swim or have limited swimming abilities.
