Jackson, MS (WLBT) - A man with car trouble walked into oncoming traffic on I-20 Tuesday morning, where he was struck and killed.

It happened in the eastbound lane of I-20 just after 11 a.m. Tuesday night highway patrol investigators return to the scene and try to recreate the accident, hoping to determine why the victim walked right into oncoming traffic.

The pedestrian who was killed has been identified as 80-year-old Edward McCunne of Lawrence. Eyewitnesses said they saw him walk out of the median and try to pass in front of oncoming traffic when he was struck.

They said he had a long cane in his hand and appeared to be having trouble walking. His vehicle was parked on the median on the other side of the interstate. One of his tires was flat, and he may have been trying to get to help.

Highway Patrol spokesman Sergeant James Walker said, "When officers got on the scene, they found a black male had been struck by a guy driving a Lincoln Town Car from out of town just passing through, apparently what happened, the subject had a flat on the westbound side and for some reason, tried to cross onto the eastbound side."

The driver of the car that hit McCunne was shaken up but unhurt. His car suffered minor damage to the left side door, but it was still drivable.

Traffic was backed up for several miles, for over an hour while the accident scene was cleared.
