Harbor Walk developer gets extension

A Madison county developer will have another year to build his Harbor Walk project at the Barnett Reservoir.

The shoreline development committee granted john Burwell the extension after hearing why he needed more time. The proposal was first made public as early as 2004.

Harbor Walk will be located at the site of the old harbor marina.

Despite being interviewed many times over the years by WLBT about Harbor Walk, Burwell didn't want to talk and tried to tell us the meeting was closed to the media.

Once he got inside he told the Shoreline Development and Environmental Quality Committee of the Pearl River Valley water supply district the money is just not available for his hotel project.

"The climate right now, to build a hotel, it just doesn't exist. It's stagnant, there is no way that that's gonna happen."

The artist's renderings of the more than $200 million dollar proposed project are still on the sign at the site, but no construction is underway. There was to be the hotel Valencia, a luxury hotel, condos, a new marina and office building. His lawyer Dana Kelly later explained the money problems.

"Traditional avenues of commercial financing are not there. And you can't build a project like the Valencia hotel, and office building, without financing from third parties."

The committee voted to give Burwell a one year extension. Comm. Chairman Jim Caraway explained why.

"We don't really have a choice. We don't have anybody else who is trying to come in and do anything with the property. "

So John Burwell gets another year to build his Harbor Walk at the Reservoir. He has already spent over a million dollars here on the new houseboat piers at the old main harbor marina.
