Local employment office gives wrong web site for oil clean-up

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Many people around the state are interested in helping out with oil spill related jobs.

The Mississippi Department of Employment Security has set up a job bank with Winn Job Centers around the state to help people find these jobs.

However, Pat Boone from Lawrence County tried to help but was given the wrong information when she called her local office.

"So we just thought okay, you know, we'll go down and do whatever we can do," Boone said.

The web site they gave her was Oilspilljobs.com. Boone said they insisted this was the correct web site.

When she told them she didn't have Internet access, she said they told her there wasn't much else they could help her with.

"It just didn't make any sense, none of it did," Boone said.

WLBT decided to test out the number Boone gave us. We dialed the Winn Job Center in Brookhaven and received a similar response telling us to go to Oilspilljobs.com.

This web site, however, is not affiliated with the state.

Boone said her concern is why a state affiliated agency is not providing the correct information.

"But the bogus web site, is what's bothering me the most. Why are they giving that out from a state agency?" Boone said.

MDES Deputy Director Stan McMorris said this was the first he's heard of this situation, but they plan to get to the bottom of it.

"This was the first I am aware of it," McMorris said. "We will do a follow-up and make sure everyone knows the proper way to get information out to the public about that."

McMorris said for those interested in applying for oil spill related jobs, they can go to their web site at www.mdes.ms.gov and click on the link that says "Oil Spill Related Jobs."

In addition, McMorris said people can call their state call center number at 1 (888) 844-3577 if someone does not have access to Internet.
