MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST (WLBT) - The Mississippi Sound is closed Thursday to all commercial and recreational finishing as oil continues to make its way to the shores along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Officials with DEQ and DMR have closed all Mississippi waters from the Louisiana state line to the Alabama state line. The bays and rivers remain open.
Oil patties are washing up on the beach in Pass Christian.
Thursday there were reports of an oil sheen about a mile from the city's shores.
Clean-up crews in full haz-mat gear collected sticky globs of oil patties, washing onto the rock jetties along the eastern side of Long Beach Harbor.
The harbor is surrounded with hundreds of yards of protective boom, but that boom is virtually useless in these strong winds and stirred-up surf generated by Hurricane Alex.
