RANKIN COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A 22-year-old man from Boyle, Mississippi, near Cleveland, has drowned in the Pearl River northeast of Jackson.

It happened Sunday night on the Rankin County side of the river, across from Ratliff Ferry Trading Post.

When John Eric Roberson hit the river, he said he was ok, but then he just went down.

There is a long rope tied to a tree that people hang onto, let it swing them way out over the river. After jumping off of a table, they let go and fall into the river.

The river is 27 feet deep here, but people think it's pretty safe.

Eddie Gilbert, who lives on the river during the summer months, watches this daily, and thinks the drowning proves how dangerous it really is.

"If is was up to me, all these swings up and down this river would be took down," said Gilbert. "Because people are hurt every summer, every week, they break their arms, legs.  It's just dangerous.  It's a lot of fun, it gives them something to do, but they don't realize just how dangerous it is."

Two 15-year-olds were swinging off the rope Monday and said they were not frightened.
