
SCOTT COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - A July 4th weekend gathering of friends on the Strong River took a fatal turn for a Simpson County man.
Simpson County Coroner Terry Tutor said Monday 28-year-old Charles Lewis "Chuck" Speights of Star drowned Saturday afternoon in the Strong River in Pinola.
The drowning was ruled accidental.
Family members said Speights and a several friends were in the river near the Chapel Creek Bridge when he went under and never re-surfaced.
His friends found him, pulled him to shore and performed C.P.R., but they were unable to revive him.
