JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A Mississippi band is back home this week after winning an international championship overseas.
For the 27th time, the Mississippi Lions All-State Band won first place in the Lion's Club international competition in Sydney, Australia.
A record-breaking number of students tried out for the band this year.
In the end, 144 high school students from across the state practiced for 11 hours a day to get ready for the competition.
They had only one week to rehearse.
Band director Jeff Cannon said the students' hard work helps the Magnolia state stand out during the international competition.
"When the band comes down the street, it's not a surprise to people outside of our country. They expect it's going to be good. Because they've seen them for so long, they recognize the uniforms. They know it's going to be good," said Cannon.
The Mississippi Lions All-State Band plans to compete in the international competition next year as well.
It well be held in Seattle.
