HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - The Forrest County Board of Supervisors has notified Hattiesburg officials it is increasing the amount of money it charges to hold city prisoners from $32 to $35 per day.
Jail officials tell The Hattiesburg American the increase is expected to generate approximately $40,000.
City officials said Monday they paid the county nearly $250,000 to house inmates in the county's downtown jail facility in the first six months of this year.
County officials said actual housing costs are around $40 a day per inmate. The board wants to get other agencies and municipalities that use the county jail closer to that figure.
For the past few years, city and county leaders have been negotiating the fee increase.
