PEARL, MS (WLBT) - A massive traffic tie up in the I-20 westbound lane began at 7:20 Tuesday morning, when an 18-wheeler, overturned spilling it's load of steel into the ditch.
Pearl Fire Chief, Carl Kibby described the spilled load, "I beam steel and it's going to take a little while to get it up, but the wrecker companies have the proper equipment to lift this, it's just time consuming."
The truck, owned by Gipson Steel Corporation out of Meridian was mangled in the wreck. The driver, said to be in good condition, taken to a local hospital after being flung around in the cab.
Traffic was diverted onto Highway 80 from Airport Road, to Pearson Road. It was slow going for many. While crews worked to remove the steel from the road. They had hoped to be done by mid morning, but during the lunch hour, they were still at it.
The interstate was finally cleared at 2 p.m.
