Inmate executed for 1994 stabbing

Posted: Updated:

PARCHMAN, MS (WLBT) - The Magnolia State has executed Joseph Daniel Burns for the 1994 stabbing death of a Tupelo motel clerk.

The 42-year-old was pronounced dead at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday at the state penitentiary at Parchman.

Governor Haley Barbour denied Burns' request for clemency.

He was scheduled to be executed at 6 p.m., but the U.S. Supreme Court delayed it to look over some legal arguments but then denied a stay of execution.

It was Mississippi's third execution this year.
