HERNANDO, MS (AP) - DeSoto County school board members are considering a policy to deal with complaints of harassment or bullying involving students or school system employees.
The Commercial Appeal reports school officials began drafting the policy in response to a new state anti-bullying mandate that went into effect July 1.
The new state law basically prohibits bullying or harassing behavior against students or school employees. Local districts were left to develop policies to deal with the issue.
Supt. Milton Kuykendall said earlier that there was a sense of urgency to develop such a policy at the state level because of the escalating level of retaliation in recent years by students who said they were victims of bullying.
