Ceremony held to welcome home soldiers

VICKSBURG, MS (WLBT) - Some of Mississippi's own are honored Thursday at a ceremony in Vicksburg.

The 412th Theater Engineer command welcomed home more than 40 U.S. Army Reservists returning from Afghanistan.

The soldiers left last year as part of the Deployable Command Post One.

They were led by Brigadier General William Buckler, Junior.

During the ceremony, each soldier received several items including an American flag.

"It was a very overwhelming experience for me to go over there, to see how people are deprived and poverty-stricken, and find out how I take a lot of things here for granted," said Captain Jarvis Buchanan.

The ceremony stems from a 2004 federal program to acknowledge reservists who served abroad.
