JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - An armed robbery and shooting at a Jackson gas station sends one man to the hospital. Police are still on the lookout for the shooter.

It happened just before 2 AM Friday at the Exxon station at the corner of Hanging Moss Road and Northside Drive.

Police said 22-year-old Austin Rawson of Florence was sitting in the passenger seat of a green Jeep Cherokee when a man walked up and demanded his wallet.

Rawson handed it over, and was shot in the stomach anyway.

The store clerk said Rawson managed to walk inside, and asked him to call police. Then, the clerk, who didn't want to be identified, told Rawson to lay on the ground and keep talking. He prayed with Rawson while they waited for police.

Rawson was taken to UMC in stable, but critical condition.

Meanwhile, the gunman ran into a wooded area behind the gas station, according to authorities.

Police made an arrest, but later released the man because witnesses couldn't identify him as the shooter.

They describe the shooter as a black male with dreadlocks. They said he is five foot seven and appears to be in his late twenties or early thirties.

John Taylor patronizes the gas station's Food Mart every day. He was shocked by the shooting.

"That's why I carry a gun," said Taylor. "And I don't like that. I been in combat before, that's no way to live, under that kind of apron."

Taylor says this isn't the first time there's been a problem at the gas station.

"[Young men] walk up to your cars, try to panhandle stuff, try to rob you," said Taylor. "Steps need to be taken to ensure people can come in and out of here safely without the threat of being shot."

A store clerk told WLBT there are no surveillance cameras outside.
