RIDGELAND, MS (WLBT) - Retailers are straightening up their inventory and hanging discount signs Thursday in anticipation for an onslaught of shopping traffic.  "It's one of our top ten days of the year," said George Tanner, manager of Dillard's Northpark.

It's two days, in fact.  Friday and Saturday of this week, Mississippi consumers can stock up on clothes and shoes of any size, and as long as each single item is priced less than $100, they don't have to worry about paying that pesky seven-percent sales tax.

Dillard's Northpark is adding more discounts on top of that to maximize the tax-free period.  "A lot of it is back to school; a lot of it is to get a new outfit for summer.  Treat yourself," Tanner said.  "Everyone loves the fact they're not paying taxes."

At Journeys Kids, also in Northpark Mall, employees are pulling out their trendiest items.

"We're ready to go tax-free," said Store Manager Octavia Chambers.  "The big hits are gonna be the Uggs, the Converse, those are popular.  Downstairs at the adult store, Converse is very popular.  The new Vans we have in (are also popular)."

But before you drape your arms with shopping bags, arm yourself with this knowledge:  Most accessories and specialized clothing items will *not* be exempt from sales tax.  For example, belts are tax-exempt, but a belt buckle by itself is not.  Hats are tax-exempt, but sunglasses are not.

Kathy Waterbury with the Mississippi Department of Revenue detailed more items on the list of excluded items.  "Cleats, golf shoes with spikes, football pants that have pads in them," she said.  "A football jersey would be included.  A lot of people wear football jerseys as outerwear."

Jewelry, handbags, and school supplies are also subject to tax.

Northpark Mall will open at 10 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, but Dillard's is opening at 9:30 a.m. Other stores in the metro area are also planning special hours and deals.

The following municipalities will not take part in the tax-free holiday:  Bolton, Enterprise, Fayette, Heidelberg, Lumberton, Magnolia, Meadville, and Purvis.
