Pilot killed in Madison County plane crash

Posted: Updated:

MADISON COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - One person is dead after a small plane crashed in Madison County Thursday evening.  Investigators are still looking into how it happened.

The crop duster was headed east when it crashed in a tree-lined area off of Renfroe Road near Canton.

Officials said the single-passenger plane burst into flames on impact.

The victim was burned beyond recognition.

The plane's owner was contacted in order to try to find out who was flying the crop duster.

One witness said he heard the plane flying really low and then a loud bang.

Bystanders attempted to pull the pilot out of the wreckage, but the flames were too intense.

"We're not even sure if he was spraying this area or not.  He's in a thick wooded area about 100 yards behind us.  What caused the crash we don't know," said Madison County Emergency Management Director Butch Hammack.

Canton fire officials and the Madison County Sheriff's Department responded to the accident.

The FAA and NTSB will take over the investigation.
