Plea deal in works for overturned murder conviction

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) – A plea deal could be in the works for the man whose 2006 Jackson murder conviction was recently overturned.

Johnny Ray Brown was sentenced to life in prison for the shooting death of Violar Bracey, whose body was found in a Jackson motel room in December of 2004.

The 28 year old was sentenced as a habitual offender because of two prior convictions for receiving stolen goods and selling cocaine.

The Mississippi Supreme Court recently threw out the conviction because of the trial judge's instructions to the jury.

Defense attorney Thomas Powell said he may see if Brown can enter a guilty plea to manslaughter which carries up to a 20 year sentence.
