VAIDEN, MS (WLBT) - A team effort among several emergency response agencies got an Iraq war vet down from a Vaiden water tower safely.
Around 11 a.m. Sunday, someone spotted a 26-year-old on top of a water tower in the Vaiden area. Vaiden police and fire departments and the Carroll County Sheriff's Department were among the first on the scene. The mother of the war veteran says upon his return from service in Iraq, he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
Carroll County Sheriff Jerry Carver said after at least eight hours on top of the water tower a highway patrol negotiator, who is also a staff sergeant in the Army Reserve, was able to talk the man into coming down for water. He was then taken to a mental health crisis center in Grenada for treatment.
