JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - You've seen the fan Entergy Mississippi's fan giveaways in the past, at places like the Hinds County Human Resource Agency on Maddox Road.  It's happening again this year.  Next week,  Entergy will dole out 350 pedestal fans and 35 window air-conditioning units to community agencies.

"We will receive the fans in our storehouse on Monday, Home Depot will deliver them, and the Community Action Agencies from across our 45 county service areas will pick them up, bring them back, distribute them to qualified recipients," said Entergy Mississippi spokeswoman Mara Hartmann.

Those who qualify are usually low-income, the elderly, or the disabled.

Karen Burks and Kenneth Cavitt of Cohea Street in Jackson fit those criteria.

With no air conditioning, no transportation, not even a working fan, they're doing their best to bear out the heat.  "Sleep naked" was Burks' response when we asked what they were doing to stay cool.  During the day, they "catch a breeze," she said.  "You do get a decent breeze now and then."

How long would they survive in heat indexes reaching well into the triple digits?  3 On Your Side contacted the Hinds County Human Resource Agency right away.  They talked to Burks by phone and offered help.

"She'll be here 3:30 tomorrow," Burks said, smiling after she hung up.

Then, arrangements were made by a private donor for our news crew to take it a step further and bring a used but working window air-conditioning unit.  It may have come just in the nick of time.

"It's good," Cavitt said as he felt the cool air blowing out of the unit.  "Thank y'all."
