JACKSON, MS (WLBT) – The events leading up tragic shooting death of Jackson Police Officer Glen Agee began when he and two other Precinct One patrolmen responded to a 911 call.

The officers went to the 2000 block of Wil-O-Wisp Way around 9:15 p.m. Friday.

There they arrested 24-year-old Latwan Dupree Smith for domestic violence and pointing and aiming.

Smith was in the back seat of the police cruiser, being transported to the Hinds County Detention Center, when he managed to escape.

Jackson police said Smith jumped out of the patrol car and ran behind the Sonic Restaurant off Highway 18.

Officers followed him into a wooded area.

That is where the shooting and search occurred, according to investigators.

Authorities with the Hinds County Jail said Latwan Smith, whose last known address was 126 North Prentiss Street, has an extensive record dating back to 2004.

Six years ago he was 18 when arrested for domestic violence and malicious mischief.

The crimes escalated to include car theft charges in Clinton in 2005 and Hinds county in 2007.

Simple assault charges followed in 2009.

Smith's arrest record also contains several domestic violence charges, resisting arrest and possession of marijuana.

He now faces capital murder charges in the death of Officer Agee, escape and convicted felon in possession of a handgun.
