Accused cop-killer pleads not guilty

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The man police say killed one of their own Friday night made his first appearance before a judge Monday morning.

Latwan Dupree Smith of Prentiss Street in Jackson is accused of killing Jackson Police Officer Glen Agee.

Smith, 24, walked through the Hinds County courthouse under heavy guard to make his initial appearance before Judge William Barnett.

Smith was constantly talking but not making any sense. Judge Barnett denied him bond after hearing a "not guilty" plea from his court-appointed attorney, Alison Kelly.

"He seemed delusional and paranoid to me, but I am not a psychiatrist," Kelly told WLBT. "We will certainly make some sort of motion to have him evaluated because he was not, in my mind, even able to understand the proceedings today."

"He has been arrested a few times, and he's been charged with a felony more than once," said Hinds County district attorney Robert Smith. "If he had been suspect of some sort of mental problems, that would have come up before."

Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart says Agee died from a single gunshot wound to the face.

Officers were still on the scene Monday trying to find the murder weapon, but the district attorney says he has a case even without it.
