JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -  The gun used to kill Jackson Police Officer Glen Agee was found Tuesday morning, said Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin.

Authorities have been combing the crime scene for days in their search for the weapon.

It was recovered just before 9 AM Tuesday, when a private citizen used his metal detector to help authorities find the 9 MM Glock 17. The Entergy employee took the day off work to do so.

According to the Hinds County Sheriff's Department, the weapon was found under the mud of a creek bed approximately 20 feet from where Officer Agee's body was found.

The gun will be sent to the State Crime Lab to be processed as forensic evidence.

"That's the piece of the puzzle that was needed in order to put that last piece of the investigation together," said Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin.

Authorities said it appears Agee was shot with his own gun Friday night during a struggle with Latwan Smith, who escaped from a police car after being arrested for domestic violence.

Smith is charged with capital murder in the case. He is currently in jail without bond.

McMillin said he would not share further information about the case until the investigation is complete and turned over to the District Attorney's office.
