Son of elderly woman charged in her death

OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) - Police have charged a 47-year-old Ocean Springs man with the murder of his mother.

Authorities say 80-year-old artist Joan McCorkindale Armstrong was killed this past weekend. Police say she was hit in the head with a brick and stabbed.

Lt. John Flowers says John Reed Armstrong was charged on Tuesday while he was still in Ocean Springs Hospital, where had been several days for treatment of self-inflicted stab wounds.

After his hospital release later Tuesday, John Armstrong appeared before Municipal Judge Matthew Mestayer who denied to set bond after determining there was a flight risk and expressing concerns over public safety. Mestayer also bound the case over to a grand jury.
