RIDGELAND, MS (WLBT) - Asia Miles of Jackson never dreamed she would get her paycheck cashed at Walmart and get counterfeit money back, but that is exactly what happened to her.
Walmart told her they didn't give out counterfeit money and turned her away. She went to Ridgeland police where her story was confirmed.
She cashed the check for $455. She spent $315 of it before Wendy's on Northside Drive told her the 20-dollar bill she gave them was counterfeit.
Ridgeland Police Lt. John Neal confirmed the remainder of her paycheck, $140, was also fake.
"I went to a fast food restaurant, and when I gave her a twenty, she told me my money was counterfeit. I gave her another bill. She said ma'am this is counterfeit also, so I gave her all the money that was left, and she said all this money is counterfeit," said Miles.
"She brought the money, and the counterfeit money is now in the custody of the Ridgeland Police Department, so Walmart is a victim also. They are," said Neal. "It looks like somebody has got some money into the Walmart system somehow."
Neal said he thinks Miles has a chance of getting some of her money back.
Walmart wouldn't talk to us.
