JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Hearts were heavy at Jackson State University's assembly center as, one by one, law enforcement officials, colleagues, and city leaders took the stage to speak about the bravery and sacrifice of Jackson Police Officer Glen Agee. He was killed in the line of duty last week.
One officer who trained the 31-year-old rookie broke down as he mentioned that the events leading up to the Officer Agee's shooting caused him to reflect on the officer's training. He couldn't get out of his mind how attentive Agee appeared to be in a recent training class.
Agee's dedication to public service was celebrated during this ceremony. "It fills my heart with joy to see the kind of respect and dignity that's been afforded this police officer by his colleagues. This has been a tedious week for us. He's been laid to rest in a way that's very meaningful," said Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson.
Afterward, a succession of motorcycles representing police departments across the state led the way as the vehicle carrying officer Agee's casket was escorted to the Westhaven Funeral Home. Police officers and officials walked alongside. Officers from some out-of-state locations came to pay their respects as well.
The Chicago Police Department might continue to help the fallen officer's family. "We started an organization called The Brotherhood of Fallen, a nonprofit organization. We try to get donations to help out with the children, every day needs, college, stuff like that," said Chicago Police Department officer Rick Cavallero.
On the night of August 6, Officer Agee and another officer picked up domestic violence suspect Latwan Smith. On the way to the detention center, Smith managed to escape the patrol car. Officer Agee was killed when his service weapon discharged during a scuffle with Smith.
Another memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 pm at Old Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church in Collins. Burial in the church cemetery will follow.
