JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Monday marks the beginning of a new school year in the City of Jackson. Families ushered it in with a big party on Saturday.
Scores of people converged on the Jackson Convention Complex for this celebration, called "First Day". Volunteers packed up free school supplies for the children to snap up. There was also free snacks and entertainment on stage.
It's a way to invigorate students for the upcoming school year, and encourage parental involvement.
"It says a lot to the children when they see a community, parents, school board, administrative staff, all work together. They know this is serious business, to start school," says JPS Superintendent Dr. Lonnie Edwards.
Dr. Edwards says no tax dollars were used to fund the event. The cash came from sponsors and non-profits.
