HINDS COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart is told there is no more room in the Paupers' Cemetery for Hinds County.
She has five bodies to bury - bodies of people whose families or close friends have not been located.
The Hinds County Sheriff's Department oversees the cemetery and digs the graves. Officials say they want to expand the cemetery onto adjacent land that was bought when a regional jail was planned. But Board President Robert Graham says $5,000 an acre is too much to spend for a cemetery. He says the county is looking for a buyer who might build a private prison.
A committee will meet this week to discuss options. Graham says those include cremation or "vertical burial," in which bodies are set upright.
