MEMPHIS, TN (AP) - The first woman has been appointed to the position of deputy attorney general in Shelby County.
Shelby County District Attorney General Bill Gibbons announced Tuesday that Amy P. Weirich took over as the second in command of the prosecutor's office.
She replaces outgoing Deputy District Attorney James J. Challen III, who retired after 32 years working in the office.
Weirich started with the prosecutor's office in 1991 and most recently served as the chief prosecutor of the gangs and narcotics prosecution unit.
Weirich is a graduate of Germantown High School and earned her law degree from the University of Memphis.
