Barbour: $6M project won't fix water system

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Gov. Haley Barbour says using $6 million in state-backed bonds for a downtown project won't fix the problems with the city of Jackson's water system.

Barbour is a member of the State Bond Commission, which rejected the city's project weeks ago. The Clarion-Ledger reports that Barbour sent a letter this week to Mayor Harvey Johnson, saying he supports replacing the old pipes with a new system. However, Barbour says the $6 million project would only benefit a small percentage of ratepayers.

Johnson has said the bond commission's decision not to include the project in a package of new state bonds was a "slap in the face" to Jackson, and a signal that the state had no plans to offer financial help for the problem.
