MENDENHALL, MS (WLBT) - Missing cash and equipment, that's what state officials say is at the center of an investigation into the Mendenhall Police Department.
The state auditor's office confirmed they were looking for missing cash in a police department vault and missing gear at the police headquarters.
Tuesday, Mendenhall Mayor Randall Neely announced Chief Bruce Barlow was being placed on administrative leave. Assistant Chief Alexander "Candy" McCullum will take over as interim chief.
City officials would not comment on the matter Wednesday.
The mayor would only say speculation about corruption in the police department was based on rumors.
Officials with the FBI would not comment as to what their agents were looking for.
Were told the investigation is ongoing, and more details will be released at a later time.
