JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A major traffic artery in downtown Jackson will soon offer a smoother ride and added convenience for motorists.
Thursday Mayor Harvey Johnson announced the State Street overlay project. A section of North State Street from Woodrow Wilson to Seneca Avenue is being repaved.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on the campus of the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
The city also will be widening a section of the street between Broadway and Seneca by about six feet to address safety concerns. In addition, they will replace the curbs and repair sidewalks.
"This is an effort to meet the needs of the medical center but also this section of town including Fondren," said Mayor Harvey Johnson.
The price tag for the project is $586,000 dollars. It's funded by the 2009 street repaving bond.
Work on the project is set to begin next week and should take approximately two weeks to complete.
