JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Children who were once fighting for their lives were reunited with the medical professionals that helped them survive.  Hundreds of children born prematurely and treated at the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at UMC gathered for a reunion with physicians, nurses and other staff.

Saturday afternoon parents shared their experiences with other families who spent time in the hospital.  Nurses who provide care to the small babies said the reunions are an emotional experience.

"I actually got to see and hold a little baby that I worked with all day.  I remember last Thanksgiving we thought this child would not make it and she did.  She is nine months old and she's healthy and smiling.  So it just makes it all worth while to see him," said NICU Registered Nurse Dawn Harrigill.

The NICU at UMC is the only level three in Mississippi.  It treats more than 4,000 patients a year from all across the state.
