FLORENCE, MS (WLBT) - Saturday's overturned gasoline tanker accident shut down Highway 49 in Rankin County for nearly nine and a half hours.

Both north and south bound lanes south of Florence were closed after the 2 p.m. crash involving the 18 wheeler and two other vehicles.

According to the highway patrol, both the SUV and tanker were traveling north on Highway 49.

M.H.P. spokesman Sgt. James Walker said the sports utility vehicle stopped suddenly in front of the tanker.

The 18 wheeler then tried to avoid the stopped vehicle and struck a third car.

The tanker then crossed into the southbound lane and finally overturned in the median.

Investigators said no one was transported for medical treatment from the scene.

The tanker was fully loaded with gasoline and began leaking.

The fuel had to be siphoned before the truck could be removed.

Traffic was re-routed during roadway cleanup.
