JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Biking across the country is already an amazing feat.

It's even more inspiring when the cyclist survived a car wreck that rendered him permanently disabled.

Larry Frederick was hit by a drunk driver back in 1982 while on duty as a police officer in California. He underwent nine surgeries and received 110 units of blood.

Now, he's biking to blood centers across the country, thanking donors for saving lives.

He visited Mississippi Blood Services in Jackson Tuesday.

"The 110 donors that gave, I don't know who they are. I'll never know who they are, but every time I meet a donor and they're on a machine, and I walk up to them and introduce myself, I shake hands with them, and I ask them, 'Have you ever had a recipient come back to say thank you for donating?' And most of them say, 'No I haven't. I've never met a recipient.' That's what charges my battery," said Frederick.

Frederick has already biked nearly 4,000 miles, from San Francisco to New Hampshire. Now, he's on the second phase of his trip, which will take him back to California.

This is his fourth time biking across the country to thank donors and encourage others to donate.

"It's my story, but it's really not about me. It's about you, it's about your children, it's about your grandchildren. It's about your local Jackson community. You're saving lives, everyday, when you come out and give blood," said Frederick.

Meanwhile, Mississippi Blood Services is low on nearly every type of blood. To donate, call 1-888-90-BLOOD OR OR 1-888-902-5663
