JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - It's been empty since Kroger pulled out three years ago, creating quite an uproar among nearby residents.  Now, a new store is moving in to take its place.

Wednesday city officials announced the arrival of Vowell's Market Place.

The grocery store will be located in the old Kroger at the corner of McDowell and Raymond Road.

Renovations are still being made to the store.

The city provided Vowell's with a 50-thousand dollar grant to make improvements.

It's expected to open by the end of September.

"This is good not only for providing a service for them, but it's also good for just the decor of the neighborhood, that there will be a different attitude as people pass by here and there is a bustling store here," said Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson.

City officials anticipate the store will bring in 8-to-10-million dollars in annual sales.

There will also be nearly 50 new jobs created when the store opens.

They will begin taking applications for those positions in two weeks.
