JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - In the wake of Hurricane Katrina many families moved from New Orleans to start a new life here in Jackson.
In the Spring of 2006, Habitat for Humanity partnered with Oprah Winfrey and NBA star Kevin Garnett to build ten fully furnished homes in midtown for those who lost everything in the storm.
Run down Elm Street was transformed in one week to beautifully landscaped Kevin Garnett court. Sunday families are reflecting on their five year journey since Katrina and the gift of a new place to call home.
"That was truly a blessing we couldn't ask for nothing than what happened after Katrina because we was down with nothing."
"Not knowing this would be my house I'm very proud to say I am so happy that we are here."
The young family have invited their neighbors over for a party to celebrate their survival and lives post Hurricane Katrina.
