MADISON, MS (WLBT) - All of the motions requested by Carla Hughes and her attorney were denied Monday morning in a Madison Court.

Madison County Circuit Court Judge William Chapman decided not to grant Hughes a new trial.  Her attorney Johnnie Walls Jr. said she will appeal to the State Supreme Court.

"When the case was put on by the end of September into October of last year, at the end of the trial period, we had sufficient evidence. We had the burden of proof required for a guilty verdict and the jurors saw that the same way.  So we didn't have any worries about coming here today," said Ridgeland Police Lt. John Neal who had testified in Hughes trial.

Hughes was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Avis Banks and her unborn child. During her trial prosecutors said Hughes was in possession of the weapon that was used in the murder. Keon Pittman was engaged to Avis Banks while allegedly romantically involved with Hughes.  Hughes was convicted of murder back in October 2009.
