JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Gunfire in the Presidential Hills subdivision Tuesday night left one man dead and another in the hospital.

It was first reported to police as a vehicle accident with injuries shortly after 9:00 Tuesday night. When Jackson Police officers arrived in the 6500 block of Van Buren they found two men had been shot -- one of them fatally.

Jackson police spokeswoman Condula Green identified the man who died as David Cortez Price, 32.

"Darius Pope, 25 years of age, was transported to UMC in stable condition," Green said.

One person was taken into custody for questioning. Police believe he was a witness to the double shooting. Officers are searching for the weapon or weapons used in the shooting.

"It's too early at this stage to determine a motive, but detectives are investigating the incident," Green said.

A dark-colored car was found at the scene. It had run into a tree, leading officers to believe that's why the call came in as an accident with injuries.

There is no word on who was driving the vehicle or whether the men involved lived in the Presidential Hills neighborhood.

Jackson Police say this is the 29th homicide this year.
