JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Police are investigating a late night shooting involving the alleged leader of the Wood Street Players Gang.

It happened around 11:15 Wednesday night outside an apartment complex on Buena Vista Boulevard at Robinson Road.

According to police, Albert "Batman" Donelson was standing next to his car with his girlfriend, Monica Collins, 19, when shots rang out.

Collins was struck in her lower left side and is in critical condition at UMC, said police. A UMC spokesperson, however, said no one by that name had checked in.

Witnesses said they saw Collins lying on the ground next to Donelson's green Cadillac.

Meanwhile, Donelson told police he ran to a nearby home in the 1600 block of Robinson Road, with the gunman behind him.

But witnesses told WLBT they saw a tall, thin man wearing a black shirt and gray shorts running in the opposite direction and jumping a fence.

Donald Showers heard the gunshots and the screams. He said someone tried to steal his air conditioning unit moments before the shooting.

"We were in our house, we heard the air conditioning unit, sound like it blew up. We ran out the door, we heard somebody scream, we looked in the back, we saw, it looked like somebody was trying to pry our air conditioning unit loose in the back, we saw a guy jump the fence," said Showers, who called police when he saw the woman lying on the ground.

Police are still on the look out for the shooter. They say he is a thin black male with a gold tooth and dark clothing.
