PARCHMAN, MS (WLBT) - The Mississippi Department of Corrections unveiled a plan to stop illegal use of cell phones in state prisons Wednesday.
MDOC Commissioner Chris Epps says "Operation Cellblock" will intercept phone transmissions to prevent unauthorized inmate communications.
The technology will make its debut at Parchman and will soon be implemented in prisons across the state.
This year, MDOC has seized about two thousand contraband phones smuggled in by visitors and prison staff.
For those crimes, officials have arrested twenty-six civilians and forty-six staff members since 2007.
